Giving up

I have a rule for giving up on books. If I make it halfway through I can count it as read. I've given up on another book tonight, my third this year.  I read one page past the halfway point. It wasn't a BAD book. I just didn't care--at all--about what was to come. I have a huge TBR pile. I have seven books checked out from the library. Life is too short to read things that aren't interesting. (Summerland. The book was Summerland by Michael Chabon.)

    Amen!

Before I had kids, I worked third shift for four years, and my co-workers eventually got used to seeing me with my nose in a book on my lunch break. Some of them even got used to me laughing aloud while reading. Almost all of them knew that if I was reading, I probably didn't want to be interrupted. But there was one guy who, every month or so, would ask, "What're you reading?" I would hold up the book so he could read the cover. Then he would ask, "Is it any good?" I finally got sick of the interruptions one night (he never wanted to know what the books were about, just if the were "any good"), and I told him, "I don't have time to read books that aren't any good. If I'm reading it, it's good."

I have three kids now. I definitely don't have time to read books that aren't any good, aren't interesting, or just aren't what I'm in the mood for.
